In the heart of Skåne, between rolling fields and tree-lined roads, lies Bjärsjölagårds Slott, which belongs to Östra Kärrtorp parish in Sjöbo municipality.
Bjärsjölagård has a long history dating back to as early as the 700s. At that time, the site was a royal stronghold for the legendary Viking Harald Hildetand, who resided at the Beritzholm fortress located next to the castle. The Danish king Valdemar Atterdag bought the fortress in 1363, and after him, his daughter, Union Queen Margareta, lived here for periods.
In the early 1500s, the fortress was considered poorly fortified, so it was demolished to make room for Bjärsjölagårds Slott, which also gave its name to the village. By the mid-1700s, the main building and northern wing – built in Rococo style – were in place, and the southern wing, built in Empire style, was added in 1812.
When the lighting for the inner courtyard’s flower bed circle, located directly in front of the castle gates – filled with boxwood hedges and blue-flowering heather – was to be replaced, they wanted to match the architecture of the castle. The choice fell on the Gustav pole light, a simple lantern with yellow cathedral glass in a classic style. The client requested the lantern to be installed on a 90cm high pole to align the lighting with the height of the vegetation. The low pole was customized at the factory in Bankeryd.
