Recreation of Lanterns with Historical Significance

We are proud to present an exciting reference project where we have collaborated with the Swedish East India Company (SOIC) to recreate and manufacture new lanterns based on historical prototypes from the old ship, the East Indiaman Götheborg.

The East Indiaman Götheborg is a replica of the original ship of the same name, which in 1745 ran aground and sank in the Gothenburg harbor on its return journey from one of its trips to China. The work to carefully recreate the East Indiaman Götheborg took place during the late 1990s and early 2000s. The ship was launched on June 6, 2003, and its first test sail took place on March 22, 2005.

On board, there are lanterns made by Westal in two different models. The lanterns are designed and manufactured at the Bankeryd factory, fully according to the original lamps that were aboard the ship.

By carefully studying the original lanterns aboard the Götheborg, we have created exact replicas that combine authenticity with modern safety standards. Our goal was not only to reproduce the historical appearance of the lamps but also to preserve their function and significance aboard the ship.

We have closely collaborated with experts and historians from SOIC to ensure that each lantern meets high-quality standards and is true to its historical origins. Every detail has been considered to give the lamps an authentic and period-appropriate feel. From material choices to design and construction, we have strived to capture the unique character of the historical lighting. However, instead of using stretched pig iron arms as "glass," we opted for opal plastic, and the fuel that makes them glow is, of course, electricity rather than tallow or oil.

This reference project is a tribute to the rich history of the Götheborg and contributes to preserving the cultural heritage. By manufacturing new lamps based on the old historical models, we have created a unique experience for those who visit the ship. We are extremely proud to have been entrusted with participating in this exciting project and look forward to continuing to use all the expertise available at our factory in Bankeryd to preserve and recreate historical lamps that will enrich other cultural sites.
