Stockholm University, located in the Royal National City Park on Norra Djurgården in Stockholm, is a dynamic academic institution. The university has approximately 30,000 full-time students, 1,300 doctoral students, and 5,500 employees. A bit further south, just a stone's throw from the city center, a new university campus has emerged, with space for 15,000 students and researchers. Campus Albano was completed and inaugurated in the fall of 2023.
Throughout the entire project, accessibility has been a key priority, which also included choosing the right hearing aids for the lecture halls. With awareness of the limitations of borrowed equipment and mobile-dependent solutions, a decision was made in consultation with Jonas Backman at Norconsult AB - specialists in AV technology and room acoustics - to install permanent hearing loops in all classrooms with 32 or more seats – a total of 42 rooms. For extra clarity, T-sign signs from Westal were also installed in each room to indicate the presence of hearing aids.
T-SIGN is a Swedish-made illuminated laser-engraved sign that shows the status of the installed hearing loop with a green or red light. T-sign is easy to install and only needs to be plugged into a wall outlet with the included power adapter to work. It can be mounted on a wall or placed on a counter or table. T-sign can be used in any space with a hearing loop - whether it’s an SLS loop, Multi Loop, or another type of hearing loop.
Accessibility is key to inclusion and participation. In lecture halls, churches, and concert halls, hearing loops create a bridge between the world of sound and those who need extra support. Hearing loops, together with our T-sign signs that clearly indicate the status of the loop, not only assist people with hearing impairments but also create an environment where everyone can enjoy sound on equal terms.
